The Ms.Scribe Story

An Unauthorized Fandom Biography

Preface -

The primary purpose of this fandom biography, as with any story, is to provide entertainment and amusement for its readers. Msscribe is a fascinating person and I believe that many people will find her eventful fandom life interesting. My secondary purpose is to preserve fandom history that is in danger of being lost -- for instance, I rescued the Fermatojam pages originally captured and posted by anatsuno from Google cache. Msscribe's story includes or touches upon many scandals and conflicts of the past five or six years in a certain sector of the Harry Potter fandom. My third purpose is to try to explain events that were complicated and hard to understand when they happened. I hope this account will provide a coherent explanation and clear up many misconceptions.

All posts, comments, and webpages quoted or shown as exhibits in this narrative are public, or were public when they were captured, or else I have explicit permission from the writer of the text to quote them. Much of my narrative is based on downloads from public posts on Msscribe's Live Journal captured on June 6, 2003 by fandom member dianora. Most of those posts are now friends-locked, but they were all public when downloaded. The same is true of the handful of other formerly public/now friends-locked posts that are included here. They were public when they were either downloaded, screencapped, or quoted by a fandom member or captured by Google, the Wayback Machine, or LJ Seek. Msscribe's real-life full name is not mentioned or linked in this account.

Occasionally, the narrative includes quotes from friends-locked posts and comments, and emails. All of these are quoted with the permission of the writer of the text quoted. This will always be noted in the text, as well.

This story is as complete and accurate as my research skills and my own memory and that of my sources could make it but I realize that there might still be inaccuracies in the story and chronology, and I welcome any corrections and additions you might have. Please leave a comment or send me an email at duchess_of_richmond@yahoo.com. My goal is to achieve 100% accuracy, and I will edit the text if I receive new information. All speculations and conclusions expressed in the narrative are my own, and are true to the best of my reasoning ability based on the information I have.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many people who have generously shared their memories, links, downloads, screencaps, locked posts, emails, IM transcripts, beta suggestions, and encouragement. I must especially thank angua9, dianora, narcissam, and tartanboxers, without whom this fandom biography would not have been possible.

You absolutely ROCK. I have posted in my LJ how admirative I am of your tour-de-force. Do you do this professionally? I have now recalled what your exposé reminds me of - David McClintick's Indecent Exposure, about the David Begelman embezzlement case at Columbia Pictures. There's the same trainwreck feeling, and the same pathology of deception and lies.

This is really hard to read, though, style-wise. It keeps breaking on part 3.

I hope you don't mind...

...but I felt compelled to post an appreciation of your fascinating work on my weblog at http://www.fabricari.com/blog/2006/07/in-praise-of-weird.php.

I have no interest in Harry Potter but I do like a good story and this is the genuine article. Thank you.

Yrs,

In regards to your most recent "Msscribe Continued"

Sorry to bother you here, but anon comments are turned off at bad_penny.

I haven't scrolled through all the posts, but in case it hasn't been mentioned...

In regards to the medical records / hospital information, by federal law (HIPPA), the hospital would not even be able to tell an individual who was calling whether or not X person was a patient, period.

HIPPA violations incur tremendous fines for every single violation (not just per patient, but per violation)

It is highly unlikely that the hospital would risk a HIPPA violation. So unless this person is a cop (with a warrant), an employee of the hospital in question, or a hacker, the odds that they were able to actually discover this information and report it as fact is extremely slim. :)

Just wow at it all, and the amount of work you've put into compiling this! Having only been in fandom for a couple of years, I never really understood the whole 'BNF' thing - it always seemed to me as though there were writers who we just as big/bigger who weren't labelled as such. I never realised there was all this going on in the background!

thesis on extreme fannish behaviors, please help

Hi, Sorry to be writing something completely irrelivent here, but this was the only way I could figure out how to contact you. For my thesis, I'm studying
distructive fannish behaviors, which, in lesser forms, are similar to those you described in the ms.scribe story, (which I loved by the way). I was wondering
if you would have any interest in looking over my questionnaire, because I want to make sure that I'm including the full range of behaviors and tendencies.
If you are interested, you can either email me (tashiegirl@rcn.com) or comment on my lj (I realize that you want to protect your annanimity.) thanks,
tasha

You know it's really funny to read all this and realize that it was going on while I was in fandom, and I had no idea. I mean I'd heard about some ruckus going on with Cassie Claire, Heidi8; communities like F_S, Fandom Wank, SQ, FA; Cassie's laptop being stolen, the various anti-HP-racist-fans campaigns, etc. I even wrote stuff "bad" enough to hopefully "get myself blacklisted." :) Thank you for clearing up some of the events that happened during that time, it's amazing the wealth of information that I missed in those action-packed years!
